The Wildcat Junior A team competed in the Eastern Hockey League (EHL) Spring Showcase this past weekend, in the Junior A U20 division.
On Friday morning, the Junior As ran into a tough Hartford Jr. Wolfpack (EHL) Junior A team. Nate Delgiudice (Southern Maine University, NCAA Division 3) made 49 saves for the 'Cats, but it wasn't enough as the Wolfpack took a 3-2 win, with a late power-play goal with only minutes left in the game. Down 1-0 after one period seemed to energize the 'Cats. Franklin Pierce University (NCAA Division 2) recruit, Anthony Langevin, buried a rebound off a shot from Ryan Chauvin (AHI Fighting Spirit) to make it 1-1. The Wolfpack would bury home a rebound of their own, to make it 2-1, but Nick Balboa (Walpole Express EHL) sniped with just over 7 minutes left in the game to tie things up at 2. After a questionable penalty called on the 'Cats, the Wolfpack would score the eventual game-winning goal, just shy of 5 minutes remaining in the game.
Friday night featured a great Junior hockey game between the Boston Bandits (EHL) Junior A team and our own Wildcats. Only a few minutes into the game, the 'Cats were handed a 5-on-3 power play. Langevin, from the point, found Chauvin down low in the slot who burried to make it a 1-0 Wildcats advantage. The Bandits would tie things up with minutes remaining in the period off a one-time shot. In the final frame, Steven Ushakov (University of Vermont D1 Club) scored off the face-off with 10 minutes remaining in the period and the 'Cats would take a 2-1 lead. The Bandits would answer only 3 minutes later off an unlucky deflection that found the 'Cats net. Final score: Wildcats - 2, Bandits - 2.
Saturday afternoon's finale showed the entire EHL why the Wildcats were one of the best teams in the showcase. The 'Cats battled against the North Jersey Avalanche Junior A, in the MJHL. Anthony Langevin scored the games 1st goal by getting his own rebound and roofing top shelf past the Avalanche goaltender. In the last period, Dom Kuziak (CP Dynamo) sniped from the high circle in the offensive zone to give the 'Cats a 2-0 lead. Finally, Ryan Chauvin scored the final goal of the game with a trick shot from behind the goal line. Nate Delgiudice would earn the shut out with a 3-0 win.
Ryan Chauvin (AHI Fighting Spirit) led the team in points on the weekend with 2 goals and 2 assists ,while Anthony Langevin (Franklin Pierce University) totaled 3 points (2 goals and 1 assist) on the weekend. Nate Delgiudice (Southern Maine University) played excellent between the pipes all weekend to help the Junior A team to a 1-1-1 showing in the highly competitive showcase and helped put the Wildcats on the map in the "Junior Hockey World."
Congrats to the Junior A team on a great weekend of hockey and best of luck to the Wildcat Peewee team as many players head to compete in the OneHockey New England Showcase this upcoming weekend with the Team East Coast Wildcats 2001 and 2002 teams!
